Since I can't attend any English course which would keep pushing me to improve, I've tried to take every learning opportunity I've come across with. The most recent and worthy has been an on line course organised by British Council through its Future Learn courses. They offer all kind of English courses and for all levels too. The one I found was called "Exploring English: Shakespeare". I was very doubtful at the beginning. Shakespeare always sounds pretty intellectual. Besides he wrote in old English which adds more difficulty to my tired brain, especially at night, when I had planned to dedicate some time to it. I finally decided to give me a try because, in essence, I enjoy the challenges and I felt that was a big one.
What can I tell you about it after six weeks of live Facebook sessions, links, lots of reading, recordings, searching and writing about The Bard?? Firstly that it has been an unexpectedly pleasant and enjoyable experience and secondly that I have lost my initial fear of him. This, my first approach to William Shakespeare and some of his plays, has made me understand a bit better this diabolical language. Now, the unattainable Shakespeare, has become the witty Will; once you realise he was a genius at wordplaying, coining and even inventing thousands of words, still in use today and an incredibly able writer with a vast work, mainly plays but also poetry.
This new, slightly disrespectful and almost rogue view of the playwright is partially due to this course but also for Terry Deary's "Horrible Histories", the large collection of historical but hilarious children oriented books and its equivalent TV series. One of them is entirely dedicated to Shakespeare. The whole collection is hysterically funny but at the same time very reliable. We are huge fans at home.
Now, if you ever visit London, don't miss The Globe, a wonderful theatre by the Thames river that is a perfect replica of the original one, built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company nearby and destroyed by fire only fourteen years later. It's worth a visit for its curious circular shape and due to the fact that there are no seats on the ground floor, only in the surrounding stalls. Theatre goers in the old days didn't care whatsoever. They just wanted to have fun by watching plenty of murders, betrayals and comic or romantic scenes. They would happily stand up for three hours if Hamlet was on stage.
About two years ago I went to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolethorpe_Hall to see "The Tempest", the last play written by Will. Obviously I struggled a big deal to understand what was going on, but it still was a remarkable experience. The atmosphere was kind of magical. Today I know that the supernatural theme has a strong presence on this play. I'm planning to repeat this coming Summer. Every year two or three different Shakesperean plays are represented there. It will be a challenge though, but I'm sure it'll be more pleasant to watch.
Desde que no puedo asistir a ninguna clase de inglés que me seguiría forzando a mejorar, he intentado aprovechar cualquier oportunidad de aprendizaje con la que me he cruzado. La más reciente y que haya realmente valido la pena ha sido un curso en internet organizado por el British Council a través de Future Learn. Ofrecen toda clase de cursos de inglés y para todos los niveles. El que encontré se llama "Explorando el inglés: Shakespeare". Estaba muy dudosa al principio. Shakespeare siempre suena muy elevado. Además escribía en inglés antiguo lo cual añade más dificultad a mi cerebro cansado, sobre todo por la noche, cuando había planeado dedicarle algo de tiempo. Finalmente decidí darme una oportunidad porque, en el fondo, me gustan los retos y sentía que este era uno de los gordos.
¿Qué puedo contaros de ello tras seis semanas de sesiones en vivo de Facebook, enlaces, montones de lecturas, grabaciones y escritos sobre El Poeta? Primero que ha sido una inesperada y placentera y experiencia de la que he disfrutado mucho y segundo que he perdido mi miedo inicial a su figura. Este, mi primer acercamiento a William Shakespeare y a algunas de sus obras de teatro, me ha hecho entender un poquito mejor este idioma del demonio. Ahora, el inalcanzable Shakespeare, se ha convertido en el ingenioso Will; una vez que te das cuenta que era un genio de los juegos de palabras, acuñando incluso inventando miles de palabras, aún en uso hoy día y un increiblemente hábil escritor con una vasta producción, principalmente obras de teatro, pero también poesía.
Esta nueva, ligeramente irrespetuosa y casi gamberra visión del autor de teatro se debe en parte a este curso pero también a las "Historias Horribles" de Terry Deary, la extensa colección de libros para niños, históricos pero divertidísimos y su equivalente serie de televisión. Uno de ellos está dedicado íntegramente a Shakespeare. Toda la colección es histéricamente divertida pero al mismo tiempo muy fidedigna. Somos muy seguidores en casa.
Bien, si alguna vez visitáis Londres, no os perdáis "The Globe" ( El Globo), un teatro maravilloso junto al río Támesis que es una réplica fiel del original, construido muy cerca en 1599 por la compañía de teatro de Shakespeare y destruida por el fuego solamente catorce años después. Merece la pena una visita por su curiosa forma circular y por el hecho de que no hay asientos en el patio de butacas, sólo en las plateas de alrededor. A los aficionados al teatro de aquellos tiempos no les importaba lo más mínimo. Solo querían pasar un buen rato viendo asesinatos, traiciones y escenas cómicas o de amor. Permanecerían tan ricamente de pie durante tres horas si era Hamlet lo que se representaba.
Hace unos dos años fui a https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolethorpe_Hal a ver "the Tempest" (La Tempestad), la última obra que se le atribuye a Will. Evidentemente me costó una barbaridad medio entender de qué iba, pero aún así fue una experiencia para no olvidar. Estoy planeando repetir este verano. Cada año se representan ahí dos o tres obras del autor. Aunque será un reto de nuevo, estoy segura que será más placentero de ver.
