Lesson 78. Back to the rules (but not so much)

  Back to work after my short Summer break hasn't been actually so traumatic. It must be the sunny weather which has shown its face this week. Pretty high temperatures (around 30ºC on Tuesday) and nothing (that can't wait) to do after 2 pm are the prime cause of my near daily journey to Bourne (15 miles away) where there is a sizeable outdoors swimmimg pool. Its facilities are in good conditions, the water temperature at a pleasant and steady 24ºC (according to one of the multiple placard displayed on the entry wall), the pool bar is acceptably provisioned with all types of hot and soft drinks plus some food such as chips, burgers, sausages, ice creams and a tuck shop. Good enough to entertain the children afternoon. It is a shame it isn't allowed to sell beer (I'd had appreciated it a good bit).

  Speaking of banning, I will give below the long policy that is expected to observe by all the swimmers:
1. No running                                                 12. No ball games

5. No glass containers                                   16. No bycicles/skateboards/water pistols

*Courtesy at all times to other visitors
*Instructions from pool staff to be followed
*Children under 8 must be supervised by a responsible person at all times
*Competent adult swimmers must supervise children and non-swimmers at all times

PEOPLE FOUND TO BE BREAKING THESE RULES WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE POOL AND MAY FACE A BAN.

  Apart from all the preceding on one of the poolsides it's written a reminder of not jumping from that side.
So I wondered what the hell was that whether a swimming pool, a young offender institution or a nunnery... Anyway and despite all the prohibitions, the noisy crowd and the fact that the coke cans available at the pool bar aren't cool at all (tough nobody seems to mind it, except for myself), it's been a delight to lay down on the fluffy grass under the shiny sun, while updating with my friends or reading a book when I have been on my own. I'm glad to be able to assure that the real (although short) Summer it isn't an urban legend in England.

Note: I flouted repeatedly number 8 (and I wasn't the only one)




  La vuelta al trabajo tras mis cortas vacaciones de verano no has sido en realidad tan traumática. debe ser el tiempo soleado que ha hecho acto de presencia esta semana. Temperaturas bastante altas (alrededor de los 30ºC el martes) y nada que hacer (que no puede esperar) después de las 2 pm son la causa principal de mis casi diarios desplazamientos a Bourne (a 15 millas de distancia) donde hay una piscina al aire libre de buen tamaño. Sus instalaciones están en buenas condiciones, la temperatura del agua (según reza uno de los múltiples carteles expuestos en el muro de entrada) a una agradable y estable temperatura de 24ºC, el bar está aceptablemente surtido con todo tipo de bebidas calientes y refrescos además de algo de comida tipo patatas fritas, hamburguesas, salchichas, helados y chuches. Suficiente para entretener la tarde a los niños. Una lástima que no esté permitido vender cerveza (lo habría agradecido bastante).

  Hablando de prohibiciones, a continuación os detallo la extensa normativa que se espera observen todos los usuarios:

* Tratar con cortesía a los demás en todo momento
* Deberán seguirse las instrucciones del personal
* Los niños menores de 8 años deberán estar supervisados por una persona responsable en todo momento
* Adultos que naden bien deben supervisar a los niños y los adultos que no sepan nadar en todo momento

 A LAS PERSONAS QUE SEAN HALLADAS ROMPIENDO ESTAS REGLAS SE LES PEDIRÁ QUE ABANDONEN LA PISCINA Y PUEDEN ENFRENTARSE A UNA SANCIÓN.

Aparte de todo lo anterior en un de los bordes de la piscina hay escrito un recordatorio de no saltar desde ese lado.
Y yo me preguntaba qué demonios era aquello si una piscina, un refomatorio juvenil o un convento...En todo caso y a pesar de todas la prohibiciones, la multitud ruidosa y el hecho de que las latas de cocacola disponibles en el bar no están para nada frías (aunque a nadie parece importarle aparte de mí), ha sido una delicia tumbarse en el mullido césped bajo el sol radiante mientras me ponía al día con mis amigas o leía un libro cuando he estado sola. Me alegra poder asegurar que el auténtico (aunque corto) verano en Inglaterra no es un mito urbano.

Nota: Me salté a la torera reiteradamente la núm 8 (y no fuí la única).

Lesson 77. What about Brexit?

  At the end of June British decided to leave the EU....and apparently nobody really expected it. The consequences were immediate. The country had split into two halfs: those who couldn't believe what had happened and those who couldn't believe it either but felt happy about it. Some things are worth to be mentioned now about people feedback. One elderly citizen, just a couple of days after the referendum, walked up to a Spanish friend and asked her politely where she was from so she replayed she was Spanish and then the gentleman told her that he wanted her to remember that there was 17 million British citizens who were delighted that she lived in the UK. She didn't know what to say to him but thank you. I, for my part, received a text message on my mobile phone from and English friend, astonished about the result, apologising and encouraging me to be proud of my nationality and of the conribution that foraigners have made to this country. Both, pro and con, speeches have been delivered at my room, while working, the week after the Brexit. Everyone has his own reason and a different point of view. The decision has already made  and after a few days of political instability and population concern the things have settled down a bit.

  In two weeks this country has been able to replace a PM after David Cameron stepped down (he didn't want to deal with EU as he campaigned for staying) without any serious trouble. His last session at the parlliament was memorable: laughs and acclamations from all the MPs. The Labour party leader, Jeremy Corbyn has also had to cope with a major crisis in his party as his leadership has been openly questioned by many of their collleagues. He still holds his own. Nigel Farage (UKIP's leader) stepped down as well after he "won" the referendum. He said he needed a rest after the happy sensation of duty accomplished. So now Theresa May is responsible for the future of the UK and she will have to negociate the new terms in Brussels. Despite the crisis al the parties are together to get the best deal. We 'll see what happens. Europe needs UK. UK needs Europe. That is the only truth.

  What do I think? .... I'm a guest here and as a guest I am respectful. I haven't felt a different treatment from my neighbours, workmates, etc at no time. I think they want to control their border, the finance and their future without anyone from Brussels telling them what to do. Nobody knows the Brexit  real consequences but it won´t be for free. This is not the first time Britain breaks away from the continent (as they tell the rest of Europe)....Look back to Henry VIII.


  A finales de junio los británicos decidieron dejar la UE...y al parecer nadie en verdad se lo esperaba. Las consecuencias fueron inmediatas. El país se había dividido en dos mitades: aquellos que no podían creer lo que había pasado y aquellos que tampoco lo podían creer pero estaban contentos por ello. Algunas cosas merecen mencionarse ahora sobre la reacción de la gente. Un anciano, sólo un par de días tras el referéndum, se acercó a una amiga española y le preguntó educadamente de dónde era y ella le respondió que era española. Entonces el caballero le dijo que le gustaría que recordara que había 17 millones de ciudadanos británicos que estaban encantados de que ella viviera en Reino Unido. Ella no supo qué decirle salvo gracias. Yo, por mi parte, recibí un mensaje de texto en mi móvil de una amiga inglesa estupefacta por el resultado, disculpándose y animándome a sentirme orgullosa de mi nacionalidad y de la contribución que los extranjeros hemos hecho a este país. Discursos, tanto a favor como en contra, se han pronunciado en mi consulta, mientras trabajaba la semana siguiente al Brexit. Cada uno tenía sus motivos y diferentes puntos de vista. La decisión ya ha sido tomada y tras unos días de inestabilidad política y preocupación de la población las cosas se han calmado un poco.

  En dos semanas este país ha sido capaz de reemplazar a su Primer Ministro, después que David Cameron dimitiera (no quería negociar con la UE ya que él hizo campaña a favor de quedarse), sin problemas serios. Su última sesión en el parlamento fue memorable: risas y ovaciones de parte de todos los miembros del parlamento. El líder del partido laborista, Jeremy Corbyn ha tenido también que afrontar una crisis fuerte en su partido ya que su liderazgo ha sido cuestionado abiertamente por muchos de sus colegas. Aún se mantiene en pie. Nigel Farage (el líder de UKIP) dimitió también traas "ganar" el referéndum. Dino que necesitaba un descanso tras la feliz sensación del deber cumplido. De modo que ahora Theresa May es responsable del futuro del Reino Unido y tendrá que negociar los nuevos términos con Bruselas. A pesar de la crisis todos los partido están unidos para conseguir el mejor convenio. Veremos qué pasa. Europa necesita a RU y RU necesita a Europa. Esa es la única verdad.

  Qué pienso yo?...soy una invitada aquí y como invitada soy respetuosa. No he sentido un trato diferente de mis vecinos, compañeros de trabajo, etc en ningún momento. Pienso que quieren controlar sus fronteras, sus finanzas y su futuro sin nadie desde Bruselas diciéndole lo que tiene que hacer. Nadie sabe las consecuencias reales del Brexit pero no les saldrá gratis. No es la primera vez que Gran Bretaña se aleja del continente (como ellos llaman al resto de Europa). Mirad atrás a Enrique VIII.

Lesson 76. Summer jazz in the Orchard

  For second year in a row we have been blessed with a wonderful both music and gastronomic experience in a cosy and beautiful location; a glorious jazz concert in a private garden just fifteen minutes far from home. Simon and Amanda (managers of Perfect Storm lifestyle) organize that kind of exclusive events that we discovered last year by chance and we enjoyed so much that we couldn´t miss the boat this year.

   The pack they offered  consisted  of a gourmet picnic (two prices depending on the choice) and a jazz concert with reputated professional musicians in an open air environment. You were free to take there your own chair and picnic table or you could go for the VIP option which included a cloth table and chairs under a gazebo. There was also a full license bar with all sorts of drinks.

  Some live music, taking your dinner al fresco, sharing a especial time with your partner (while kids are safe and asleep at home, blessed babysitter) is something highly recommendable. Summertime is perfect to enjoy these outdoors events and we didn't miss the bus. So didn´t a decent amount of people, most of them in their fifties or so. Despite the magic atmosphere the audience appeared a little bit cold. I don't say they did not enjoy....it is perhaps that English need a football match to express enthusiasm. Otherwise it is a delight to see them eating their meal silently and sharing their opinions barely whispering to avoid disturbing the musicians or the devoted audience.

  The outside offer is endless at this time of the year: the open air film festival at Burghley House gardens is pretty tempting and something to enjoy in family as some of the films are suitable for children. Another important date is the annual season of Shakespeare plays form June to August at Rutland Open Air Theatre in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall. This year we missed the film festival but hopefully I still can get a ticket for the Shakespeare´s Macbeth or The Tempest. I will tell you anyway.


 


   Por segundo año consecutivo hemos sido bendecidos con una maravillosa experiencia tanto musical como gastronómica en un lugar precioso y acogedor: un glorioso concierto de jazz en un jardín particular a sólo  15 minutos de casa. Simon y Amanda (gerentes de Perfect Storm Lifestyle) organizan este tipo de eventos exclusivos que descubrimos por casualidad el año pasado y lo disfrutamos tanto que no podíamos perder la oportunidad este año.

  El paquete que ofrecían consistía en un picnic gourmet (dos precios distintos dependiendo de la elección) y un concierto de jazz con reputados músico profesionales en un ambiente al aire libre. Podías llevar tu propia silla y/o mesa de picnic o podías optar por la oferta VIP que incluía mesa con mantel y asientos bajo una pérgola. Había también una barra con todo tipo de bebidas.

  Un poco de música en directo, cenar al aire libre, compartir un momento especial con tu pareja ( mientras lo niños están dormidos y a salvo en casa, bendita canguro) es algo muy recomendable. Verano es la época perfecta para disfrutar estos eventos al aire libre y no perdimos el salto. Tampoco lo hicieron una cantidad decente de público, la mayoría de ellos en su cincuentena o así. A pesar de la atmósfera mágica el público se mostraba un poquito frío. No digo que no les gustara...es quizá que los ingleses necesitan un partido de fútbol para demostrar entusiasmo. Por otra parte es una delicia verlos comiendo silenciosamente e intercambiar opiniones apenas susurrando para evitar molestar a los músicos o al público entregado.

  La oferta en la calle es interminable en esta época del año: el festival de cine al aire libre en los jardines de Burghley House es muy tentadora y algo que disfrutar en familia ya que muchas de las pelis son aptas para niños. Otra cita importante es la temporada anual de junio a agosto de obras de teatro de Shakespeare en el teatro al aire libre de Rutland situado en los campos del histórico Auditorio de Tolethorpe. Este año nos hemos perdido el festival de cine pero a lo mejor aún puedo conseguir una entrada para el Macbeth o La Tempestad de Shakespeare. Ya os contaré...
