Lesson 53. National Trust

There is a foundation called National Trust (NT) which is in charge to look after the Great Britain´s heritage including houses, gardens, mills, coastline, forests, castles, nature reserves and more. It was founded in the latest 1800 and now a huge amount of volunteers (more than 50.000) work for it performing so many different tasks such as working as a room guide, attending the box offices, leading all kind of activities, helping the gardening team...

Paying around 100 pounds (for a family of two adults and their children or grandchildren under 18) you will became a member for a year. It gives you the right to visit with no additional payment all the NT properties during that year. Depending on the places two or three visits will amortise your investment.

We have visited some of them. The last one, a well-kept farm not far from home called Woolsthorpe Manor, the birthplace and family home of Sir Isaac Newton where during the pest plague year and Cambrigde University closed, he came back home and spent time making the first reflecting telescope and split light into rainbow colours. Interesting place specially for little scientists which can get involved and try on several experiments and discoveries at the Sciences Centre in another building next to the family house. The inspiring apple tree is placed in the garden, that one which the genius saw the apple falling down from while he thought over the planets movement.

It also exist the English Heritage. A different association which brings together other historic places (over 400) and it has similar features.

Will anyone interested in improving his knowledge about the country resist to such a tempting opportunity? It's not my case indeed.

Lesson 52. The dentist

Everybody knows that dental check-ups are expensive. Nevertheless they can be up to 40% cheaper if you belong to the NHS dental care assistance. Consequently everyone apply for it but there is a long waiting list at any  NHS Dental Practice and by the time you are approved you will probably have needed some assistance. Anyway it is worth a try unless you are one of the wealthy ones. Despite the premises above my family and I were just admitted in two months time after applying and I received a call phone for a first visit.

My dentist is an Iranian doctor and he is really kind,
- Is your surname German?
- Not at all, it's Spanish
- Uh, I love Spain, I've been there recently...I went to Barcelona, very nice city (he doesn't know that apparently they don't want to be Spanish, although they are at the moment) but your name is German isn't it?
- I'm afraid again not.
and I had to explain to him that story about the German Car Company owner's Spanish wife  and the reason to name the Company with a Spanish name.
He asked me a few general questions, examined and scanned my teeth and he added showing me the X-ray on the screen
-You can see a shadow underneath this filling, I don't know what is but it's worrying me a bit. I'd suggest to remove it and see what is in it.
-What do you mean with "feeling"? (how embarrassing it's not knowing the specific terms) Is it when you have a partially black tooth and then it's removed and it's put a silver or white thing on it??
-BINGO!
And that is the way I've learnt the meaning of fillings (sounds like feelings), cavities, gum and others in less than fifteen minutes.
- You should also go to the hygienist as soon as possible

A few days later I had my dental hygiene and a practical lesson to clean my teeth properly using a false teeth and an electronic toothbrush. The hygienist also recommended me to use dental floss and repeating the hygiene in three months time because I had lots of tartar and she couldn't remove it completely.
- Mercy, your gums are not happy
- Really?? I tried to reply her while my mouth was open
Sometimes I allow other people to call me Mercy when it's so difficult to pronounce my name for them.
That's the matter with the dentists, after you start going they grab you for ever

Lesson 51. Welcome back!

After this neither son long nor so hot English summer, which just flew as it usually happens when your activity level is very high, I mean, starting my job at a local Surgery, moving house again and happily receiving several visits from relatives and friends; I realize that we have just successfully met our first year abroad and we are full of energy (thanks three sunny and warm Spanish weeks) to face the second one.

Now that we have definitely settled in so well and we have been able to built what we feel our new home, now that we have made some new friends and we also can understand a little bit more this lifestyle and culture, even we are getting used to it... Now it is time to have some fun!

Why not trying on new experiences? I am interested in exploring the countryside, particularly the surrounding Natural Parks. I even bought a pair of hiking boots last week...I would love to socialize a little bit more, specially with the locals and I bet it is going to be easier after I got my job. There is no need for rushing. I am sure it is not getting longer to know my colleagues better. I am also keen on visiting new places. It would be inexcusable to live here and not going on little (or not so little) trips along the Green Country.

We will see what we can do this second year. Certainly it is being an extraordinary adventure and a unique living experience which it will remain for ever.

Thank you for being there, my dearest friends, I am so glad to resume my blog again!!! See you soon!!!

Lesson 50. Where there is a blame, there is a claim

As I suspected, complaining is an incredibly extended practise among the Brits. I declare it after gathering a few facts which inevitably have led me to this point.
Clue number 1: since I can remember I have been taught to write complaint letters in the different English courses which I have taken part in.
Clue number 2: complaint letters are ALWAYS one of the required exercises within the English writing tests.
Clue number 3 (and the definitive one): there is a saying in this respect to my surprise and it says "Where there's a blame, there's a claim".

Of course "a claim/complaint book is available at the dispossal of the customer who requires it" is a well-known legend by everybody in any civilized country, but in this one the people is particularly keen on use it at any time and repeatedly.

If an English goes out for dinner and, for example, in his taste the soup had a weird savour, or found the meat a little bit tough or overcooked, he'll with no doubt ask for the famous book and immediately the Manager will compensate him as best as he can to avoid a complaint letter, so dire for the business and he might offer him a free meel the next week.

Nevertheless in a dress shop it can be even more atonishing because the possible reasons to complaint list is huge and utterly incredible. I'll give you some examples: " the shop assistant laught at me, she said I was fat", "the real colour of the shirt is slightly clearer than it appears on the website", "I fell down when I accidentaly slipped because of a banana peel" (which she actually had just dropped-lol). ..and finally the whiny complainer will get the clothes for free.

I guess there must be a legion of complainig experts in the UK. Definitely.

Seguro.

Lesson 49. Let's go for a picnic

British Spring is similar to Andalusian Winter. This is a fact. However sometimes the sun is stronger than the clouds and everybody runs to Recreation park with the kids looking for a warm and nice outdoors afternoon. The days are very long (sunset is over 9 pm yet). The lack of sunlight is now a distant reminiscence and it obviously has a  consecuence in our mood. The field is plenty of coloured flowers, shiny green grass and some flying bugs. You must put up with some rainy days to enjoy this splendorous Nature. I miss the hot days from the South of Spain but I must admit that 15 C degrees allow you to do much more things than 35 C degrees.
Some years ago I won a blanket picnic from a charity raffle, it is a commercial one, made of plastic, nearly a straw mat but it is really useful for that purpose. This one and an old beach bag full of strawberries, biscuits, dry fruits, some juice or water and a diet come for me are enough to spend the afternoon/evening sitting under the big tree with friends at Recreation while the children climb the trees up, play football, ride on the slide or fly a kite.
Specially this half-term week, which I am not in a hurry because my son may go to bed later than usual, I love to stay longer.....as when you are in the beach and people start coming back home but you don't because that is for sure the best time to be there. Lying on your back, just looking up the sky.

Lesson 48. The interview

I had never done a job interview before. I was lucky to find my first job at the Spanish NHS quite young and although I´ve moved from a position to other many times, it never was necessary.
Around March I knew by accident that there was a nurse vacancy in a local Health Centre. There was no advert about it on the NHS job website but I decided to write a cover letter and deliver it personally along with my CV at the reception. Next day I received a call from the Practice Manager who wanted me to have an informal meeting because he and the Nursing Manager had been really impressed with my background in Spain and they was interested in knowing me just to talk about it.
That meeting was held in a pretty relaxed atmosphere. We were speaking about our movement into the UK, my professional experience, the cultural differences between our countries, the language, our settling in here and things like that..... At the end I asked them if they was looking for a nurse, because I have such a vague information about it. Yes, they was in need for a nurse, but they still hadn't find the suitable person. I hadn't got my PIN number from the NMC by then, so they were so  kind to invite me to contact them again when I had my acreditation and they could see an employment opportunity for me then.
It's been a long journey to get the bloody PIN number. At least it has seemed to me. A month and a half later I got it shortly after the Health Centre adverted the position openly on the NHS website. Seeing the advertisement and the nearing deadline it was a little bit stressful, until I finally received the desired certificate just in time. So I applied for the vacancy and I had a proper interview last week. I was nervous for my still little fluent speaking but I felt absolutely confindent about my professional skills and my long nursing experience and background. So I was there, dressed in smart clothes, discreet make up and smily face; ready for the battle as I were an senseless teenager. It was fifty minutes of questions from three staff members, the typical for a job interview according to normal practice: introduce yourself, strengths and weaknesses, why do you want to work there, updating, previous experience, ideal features in a work team inyour opinion, and after some pretended cases to solve. I could explain myself quite good, they nodded in agreement, they even tried to speak slowly for me. The feeling was absolutely fantastic and I said goodbye with  some repeated thank you and a "I really hope to see you all again".
On Friday evening I received THE CALL. They are happy to give me an opportunity as part-time advanced practice nurse at their Centre, which fits perfectly with my current situation and needs.
I'm more than happy. It's easy to find a job as a nurse in the UK, but I was applying for a Senior position, I'm in my forties and I don't control the language. I am very pleased.
Next time more and better.
Estoy encantada.
La próxima vez más y mejor.

Lesson 47. Nibbles & giggles

When I tell you about the hundreds of events organised because of charity I don't lie or exaggerate neither. Last Saturday I was invited to a raising evening for MacMillan (a cancer support foundation) at Wendy's home, one of our PTA mothers. A fantastic opportune moment to meet new people or have a relaxing chatting side-by-side you may contribute a little for a worthy cause. We were asked to bring some drinks and grant a few pennies (or the equivalent you spend in a night out). I have no idea how often that kind of event is held or wether this girl usually does it. What I can assure is that we spent a very nice time and everybody was really friendly, charming and kind. After a cup of wine, which helps to break the ice, the talk became an interesting views exchange and two drinks later everybody was giggling and maybe some secrets were revealed!!!
At certain ages it's not easy to make new friends, even to meet new people beyond just vaguely knowing your neighbors or some school parents. Everyone has already his well built circle of friends. I firmly believe that making friends not only requires quite time but also similar interests, likes or conditions to let the people share their experiences and  points of view.
As most of you already know, I am a very sociable person. I can't understand the world individually. My friends have a special significance in my life and although it may seems odd I've never stopped to add new and good friends which it has become me hugely rich. I hope to keep on the same road.
Anyway, many thanks to all my friends: the oldest, the newest and the ones who remain to be come... Cheers!

http://www.ineedtext.com/FoodBlog/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Farmers-Market-070-449x337.jpg

Salud!
