Lesson 79. You, lazy cow!

I can't believe how quick September has gone (and how dry it's been, by the way). My days fly away and all of a sudden it seems to me I've lived here for ages. This morning at the Surgery my old neighbour, the bins watcher, had an appointment with me. It's been more than a year since we moved house and I had never come across with him. However he, and this doesn't surprise me at all, kept perfectly track of my current employment status...."you have been working here for about one year, haven't you?, I've seen you here several times but you were always rushing off, you're a busy lady, aren't you?" And he has carried on with his set of questions about my family to satisfy his natural curiosity. Some things don't change. He has been lovely as usual, anyway. How far those stuttering and panick of speaking this weird language are now. Those days make me smile today although I couldn't consider myself a fluent speaker, not yet.

All above leads me to the conclusion that our achievements are made of little steps, our learning shouldn't stop ever and that makes our life much more complete by far. It is obvious that my interests and likes are concerned with intellectual activities. Yes, I'm a lazy cow, don't look for me at the gym or at an indoors swimming pool. The only physical activity I do, at most, is walking or cycling (in a relaxed manner of course). But give me a book, some live music, a play or a good film, then I will be the most happy creature in this world. It is so easy to please me that I usually do it by myself. I may be a selfish person but I find nearly everyday a time to give me the treats I enjoy. When you are in good spirits, the people around perceive it, and receive from you a little portion of happiness, don´t they? There´s no reason to change, then.

At the moment I´m writing it has start to rain...why in hell did I say earlier it had been a dry month?Nevermind...some rain drops on the window take a reading (or a writing) afternoon to the greater heights.

Algunas cosas no cambian.

Lesson 78. Back to the rules (but not so much)

Back to work after my short Summer break hasn't been actually so traumatic. It must be the sunny weather which has shown its face this week. Pretty high temperatures (around 30ºC on Tuesday) and nothing (that can't wait) to do after 2 pm are the prime cause of my near daily journey to Bourne (15 miles away) where there is a sizeable outdoors swimmimg pool. Its facilities are in good conditions, the water temperature at a pleasant and steady 24ºC (according to one of the multiple placard displayed on the entry wall), the pool bar is acceptably provisioned with all types of hot and soft drinks plus some food such as chips, burgers, sausages, ice creams and a tuck shop. Good enough to entertain the children afternoon. It is a shame it isn't allowed to sell beer (I'd had appreciated it a good bit).

Speaking of banning, I will give below the long policy that is expected to observe by all the swimmers:
1. No running                                                 12. No ball games
2. No spitting                                                 13. No smoking
3. No swearing                                               14. No pushing people into the pool
4. No alcohol                                                 15. No sitting on black bars
5. No glass containers                                   16. No bycicles/skateboards/water pistols
6. No petting                                                 17. No stereo systems (except personal stereos)
7. No balls (except inflatable beach balls)    18. No coins in the water
8. No filming or photography                       19. No acrobatics
9. No bombing                                              20. No somersaults
10. No back diving                                        21. No vandalising pool property
11. No diving from café side of the pool      22. Swimwear only to be worn in the pool

*Courtesy at all times to other visitors
*Instructions from pool staff to be followed
*Children under 8 must be supervised by a responsible person at all times
*Competent adult swimmers must supervise children and non-swimmers at all times

PEOPLE FOUND TO BE BREAKING THESE RULES WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE POOL AND MAY FACE A BAN.

Apart from all the preceding on one of the poolsides it's written a reminder of not jumping from that side.
So I wondered what the hell was that whether a swimming pool, a young offender institution or a nunnery... Anyway and despite all the prohibitions, the noisy crowd and the fact that the coke cans available at the pool bar aren't cool at all (tough nobody seems to mind it, except for myself), it's been a delight to lay down on the fluffy grass under the shiny sun, while updating with my friends or reading a book when I have been on my own. I'm glad to be able to assure that the real (although short) Summer it isn't an urban legend in England.

Note: I flouted repeatedly number 8 (and I wasn't the only one)

Bourne Outdoor Pool on the hottest day of the year so far (hottest for 160 years?)

1. No correr                                                                     12. No juegos de pelota
2. No escupir                                                                   13. No fumar
3. No insultar                                                                  14. No empujar gente a la piscina
4. No alcohol                                                                  15. No sentarse en las barras negras
5. No recipientes de cristal                                             16. No bicicletas/monopatines/pistolas de agua
6. No animales domésticos                                             17. No equipos de música (salvo personales)
7. No pelotas (salvo inflables de playa)                          18. No tirar monedas en el agua
8. No videos ni fotografías                                              19. No acrobacias
9. No tirarse de bomba                                                    20. No dar volteretas
10. No tirarse de espaldas                                               21. No dañar las instalaciones

Lesson 77. What about Brexit?

At the end of June British decided to leave the EU....and apparently nobody really expected it. The consequences were immediate. The country had split into two halfs: those who couldn't believe what had happened and those who couldn't believe it either but felt happy about it. Some things are worth to be mentioned now about people feedback. One elderly citizen, just a couple of days after the referendum, walked up to a Spanish friend and asked her politely where she was from so she replayed she was Spanish and then the gentleman told her that he wanted her to remember that there was 17 million British citizens who were delighted that she lived in the UK. She didn't know what to say to him but thank you. I, for my part, received a text message on my mobile phone from and English friend, astonished about the result, apologising and encouraging me to be proud of my nationality and of the conribution that foraigners have made to this country. Both, pro and con, speeches have been delivered at my room, while working, the week after the Brexit. Everyone has his own reason and a different point of view. The decision has already made  and after a few days of political instability and population concern the things have settled down a bit.

In two weeks this country has been able to replace a PM after David Cameron stepped down (he didn't want to deal with EU as he campaigned for staying) without any serious trouble. His last session at the parlliament was memorable: laughs and acclamations from all the MPs. The Labour party leader, Jeremy Corbyn has also had to cope with a major crisis in his party as his leadership has been openly questioned by many of their collleagues. He still holds his own. Nigel Farage (UKIP's leader) stepped down as well after he "won" the referendum. He said he needed a rest after the happy sensation of duty accomplished. So now Theresa May is responsible for the future of the UK and she will have to negociate the new terms in Brussels. Despite the crisis al the parties are together to get the best deal. We 'll see what happens. Europe needs UK. UK needs Europe. That is the only truth.

What do I think? .... I'm a guest here and as a guest I am respectful. I haven't felt a different treatment from my neighbours, workmates, etc at no time. I think they want to control their border, the finance and their future without anyone from Brussels telling them what to do. Nobody knows the Brexit  real consequences but it won´t be for free. This is not the first time Britain breaks away from the continent (as they tell the rest of Europe)....Look back to Henry VIII.

Ella no supo qué decirle salvo gracias.

Europa necesita a RU y RU necesita a Europa.

Mirad atrás a Enrique VIII.

Lesson 76. Summer jazz in the Orchard

For second year in a row we have been blessed with a wonderful both music and gastronomic experience in a cosy and beautiful location; a glorious jazz concert in a private garden just fifteen minutes far from home. Simon and Amanda (managers of Perfect Storm lifestyle) organize that kind of exclusive events that we discovered last year by chance and we enjoyed so much that we couldn´t miss the boat this year.

The pack they offered  consisted  of a gourmet picnic (two prices depending on the choice) and a jazz concert with reputated professional musicians in an open air environment. You were free to take there your own chair and picnic table or you could go for the VIP option which included a cloth table and chairs under a gazebo. There was also a full license bar with all sorts of drinks.

Some live music, taking your dinner al fresco, sharing a especial time with your partner (while kids are safe and asleep at home, blessed babysitter) is something highly recommendable. Summertime is perfect to enjoy these outdoors events and we didn't miss the bus. So didn´t a decent amount of people, most of them in their fifties or so. Despite the magic atmosphere the audience appeared a little bit cold. I don't say they did not enjoy....it is perhaps that English need a football match to express enthusiasm. Otherwise it is a delight to see them eating their meal silently and sharing their opinions barely whispering to avoid disturbing the musicians or the devoted audience.

The outside offer is endless at this time of the year: the open air film festival at Burghley House gardens is pretty tempting and something to enjoy in family as some of the films are suitable for children. Another important date is the annual season of Shakespeare plays form June to August at Rutland Open Air Theatre in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall. This year we missed the film festival but hopefully I still can get a ticket for the Shakespeare´s Macbeth or The Tempest. I will tell you anyway.

Lesson 75. My great Indian wedding

It hasn't been mine, certainly, and on the other hand it hasn't been 100% Indian either but it doesn't matter because the fact is that firstly there was an Indian wedding, the next day there was a civil wedding and finally there was a glorious reception party. That way my dream of experiencing a British wedding came true as it has been a British Indian Spanish wedding, what a beautiful mixture of people, cultures, traditions, food, music and styles. It seems to be that true love can pull down even the most solid wall.

The most Indian: it was the religious ceremony at a Budhist Temple somewhere in London. A sight to behold. I was amazed by the richness of the women's dressess (especially the bride's), the complexity of the ritual (full of symbolism) but what enthralled me the most were those rapturous gazes between the bride and the groom. It was so emotional....as any wedding should be, shouldn't it?

The most British: I was going to write it was the toast but, actually, there were at least six speeches in the middle of the meal (may be any left). Not only the best man delivered his speech (hilarious) but the groom (a passionate purpose statement), the groom's brother (a public confession), the groom's mum (tender and sang), the bride´s best friend (tearful) and the bride's goddaughter (adorable). Needless to say, everybody there ended up using our napkin to wipe our tears.

The most Spanish: it was probably the noise....and the open bar (LOL). Just joking! seriously I think it was the enthusiasm, the interest for knowing the people and communicating.

Lots of dancing, drinking,  laughing and amusement. Thank you Vanessa and Pritesh for the moments you gave us away and for two magic days. I wish you all the happiness and a long long life together.

Lesson 74. The Lord be with you

There are around 6 million Catholic people in Britain. We are lucky to have a Catholic Parish Church in Stamford which give us support and all the essential services. Ovbiously it is a small community and probably for that reason it is also warm, kind and welcoming. You can feel quickly that you are part of that family. After two years going to the Sunday Mass I already know most of the habitues. Here I find the liturgy richer and more ceremonious than in Spain. The Priest and his acolytes come in procession from the outside of the Church at the beginning and also when the Mass has finished. There are a lot of hymns and songs too. Apart from my spiritual life reward I haven´t missed the bus on having many free English listening lessons. The prayer book that is within anyone's reach has been a useful tool both to learn the prayers in English and to wider my vocabulary and language understanding.

It is been good to me and my family to become part of this cosy community and I am very grateful. We have recently had a wonderful experience tightly bound to our religious life. Our son has had his First Holy Communion last Saturday. There have been twelve children that have  learned a little bit more about Jesus and the sacraments. I wish this is the starting deep friendship with the Lord. The whole community have been involved: the choir, the catechizers, the ladies who arranged the Church and of course Father Simon. Thanks to all of them. After the service one of the members of the choir came up to me and we were chatting for a while: "It is funny that after the (sadly) Brexit, precisely this year we've likely got the most numerous First Holy Communion not British children group  at St. Mary and St. Augustine's..." (I have to say that although half of the population are happy with the leave but the other half are shocked, concerned and ashamed and because of their character they are in need of apologizing with the foreigners....isn't it tender?).

Finally I would like to thank to all the family from Spain who joined us to celebrate altogether such an important day. We are aware of the  little children out of routine, fear of flying, left driving stress, economic cost and tiredness. We really appreciate all your effort. I hope you have had a full English experience (or at least the full English breakfast at the B&B). We love you so much!

Lesson 73. Walking London

This early Summer half-term is, by far, the most popular and usable short holiday among all the rest. The roads are cluttered with cars and the trains with people. This is a big country (around 67 million population). It must be difficult to handle so much travellers well enough  at this specific time of the year. Railroad companies are clearly improbable. However living in Stamford I find the train the best way to go to London. Putting up with crowded coaches, platforms changes announced literally at the very last minute, even sharing your personal space with barker football hooligans is better than being stuck at the A1, the traffic restrictions in the city or the unaffordable parking fees there.

High-spirited by the vernal weather we set off early one Sunday to made the most of the day at the always fascinating London. From King´s Cross Station by Northern line tube you'll arrive to Camden Lock Market in ten minutes. It's a lively commercial area. There are loads of shops (leather, hats, antiques, beadwork. Morocco lamps, African or Asian fabrics, hand-made pottery, second-hand records...), food stalls (Mexican, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Italian...), restaurants, coffee shops, buskers and much more. We spent the morning just wandering around. The atmosphere was sort of magic and cheery. Lots of young people were sitting at the canal enjoying their exotic take-away meals. We picked and chose an open-air bar with a wonderful view of the market to refresh our throats. A guy played his acoustic guitar and pleased the public ears with versions of pretty popular songs from the 70's and 80's.

Next stop was near the Thames river at the Tate Gallery to see meanly some Turner's and Constable's paintings. I don't know why but the museums' coffeeshops are usually delightful places to take a breath (and also to have a tea with a cake) before to carry on with your relaxing walk. This one has got a wonderful patio surrounded by a bright green garden. Its brownie is delicious.

A walk by the Riverside it is worthy  for the formidable Houses of Parliament shape which can be seen far off into de distance. It is also a pleasure enjoying a cold  beer at whichever stall on the other side of the river. When the weather is nice you shouldn't miss that experience: hanging around and watching at the throng of tourists from all over the world while you are sitting next to the river.
