Lesson 100. Happy 100 lessons!!!

It’s been three years and a half we started the adventure. Shortly after I decided, encouraged by a good friend, to write these little pieces of my own life and experiences. What began unassumingly as an exercise to improve my writing as well has become eventually a precious treasure to me. Actually I’ve just reread a handful of lessons though. Some of them make me blush due to their poor grammar and many mistakes. However I’m proud of having tried and overcoming my fears of being so exposed. Partially because you, my dear secret readers, are a devoted and sympathetic audience. Despite all I don’t write thinking of you but of my own needs.

Now here I am, a hundred lessons later, looking at the screen of my tablet, tempted to list my achievements or  my expectations  for this incipient year but I won’t, it’s tedious and boring. I’m lazy and those list simply don’t work for me. I can’t avoid, though, having a quick thought of the people I’ve met, the dozens of  (embarrassing) misunderstandings, the (always short) journeys, the (glorious) pubs, the (long) afternoons at Recreation, the (crazy) nights out, the (thrilling) live music, the (fascinating) sheep, the (challenging) jobs, some (charming) patients, my (beautiful) classmates, my (outstanding) teachers, the (at first enigmatic) PTA, the secret Santa’s, the Friday’s coffees, those who (sadly) left, the plays, the (subtitled) Telly, the (proudly read) books, the (risky) driving, the (hundreds of) cuppas, the BBQs, the (inconvenient) rain, the (silent) snow, the laughters and the tears.... this green life unfairly summarized in just one hundred lessons. I didn’t mean to make any list, I swear!

This unplanned blog will keep safely these years of my life. It ended up being a right decision and I’m very grateful to those who contributed in any way to carried it out at last. To those who some time have read it, many thanks too. I hope you’ll come along for the ride. Happy 100 lessons!!!

Soy perezosa y esas listas simplemente no me funcionan.

Felices 100 lecciones!!!

Lesson 99. Christmas race

I don’t mean the Fun Fun Santa Race which will be held on Sunday at Burghley park. It gets to gather thousands of amateur runner, including  the elder, the children and the disabled. You’re not obliged to run if you’re not able to....the main thing is to disguise in Santa’s and being part of the fun in exchange of a small (or big) donation for any charity of your choice.

We find ourselves desperately looking for a Christmas jumper to be worn by our kids one of the latest days of this term at school.
-. Pleaseeeee does anyone have a spare Christmas jumper for my two boys aged 7 and 5?  Mums bay in her last attempt to avoid another useless hidden extra on the WhatsApp chats. Whether you get the jumper or not isn’t as important as the fact of other mums solidary response....
-. There are some at Primark, Asda, etc...
-. Why don’t you try and do it yourself? (and they attach the appropriate Pinterest link)

Don’t forget to write the Christmas cards and make sure your children do it too in your long list of tasks to be done promptly. Let’s put some Christmas decorations at home. You should be ready for the  visit of Santa who pounds the streets of the town but you never know when he would pop in your neighborhood (again mums will help you out on Whatsapp).

School Christmas Fair is one of the most important funding event of the year so you can’t miss it. Besides is a good opportunity to share a cuppa with both teachers and parents. The children have a good time and eat lots of junk food and sweets. If you’re lucky enough you can win a fabulous prize at the Christmas raffle. If the children are lucky enough they won’t throw away all the rubbish they have previously swallowed up.
To top if off there is the endless volley of meals, dinners and parties with both colleagues and friends to celebrate the festive season. All extraordinary. We’ve been blessed with lovely people around to share a bottle and some laughter with.

In the middle of this jumble one needs to make room for the essential. Baby Jesus is Coming and I’ve managed to receive daily a short meditation through my mobile phone. What a wonderful and easy way to prepare myself for Christmas. I hope to be ready by the end of Advent. Merry Christmas to all of you in case I’m too busy to deliver a new post before we go back home.

Lesson 98. Low cost

I used to fly less than once a year, I mean, I was an occasional customer for the airlines. Nevertheless since we live at the green plains my experience as a plane passenger has become large enough to realize how much I dislike flying. The only time I remember a pleasant flight was years ago  when we had the chance to fly in first class  from London to New York due to tourist class had been overbooked. We were lucky then, it’s another world to have plenty of space and being given away with a glass of champagne and some nibbles to relax whilst you adjust yourself the wide reclining seat, even more confortable than a sun lounger. Then “enjoy your flight” makes definitely sense. The way the vast majority of us fly is quite different though.

Low cost airlines invariavly imply low quality, lack of space and comfort, being herded like sheep stoically waiting in the middle of the airstrip, under the rain mostly, for someone from the crew authorizes the first passenger in the queue to board. Every single time we fly to Spain with the same hated low cost airline and without any other option since it’s the only one that flies daily from Stansted (the nearest airport) at a suitable time for us. Prices, by the way, aren’t that low as they are raised at every half-term when we are able to travel....Despite everything we shouldn’t complain. Not so long ago flights were only affordable by the  privileged.

After over three years doing the same journey and back there are few things we haven’t gone through but the airport and its border is always a challenge and it may puzzle the most experienced traveler. I’ll borrow one of the funniest anecdotes I’ve ever heard from someone very close to me who came over to see us about a year ago. She bought a snow globe as a souvenir and she wasn’t allowed to carry it unless it was checked in but there wasn’t time and on top she couldn’t  speak nor understand English. After a few minutes of confusion she ended up hitting the snow globe against a litter to get rid of the liquid. Neither snow nor crystal ball anymore but she could save and finally carry the delicate china Christmasy village before the very eyes of the astonished security officer!!! LOL

Lesson 97. Lucky girl

“ - Would you come up for an informal meeting or would you rather a conversation on the phone?”
“ - Ermmm...I’m sorry, but I still struggle on the phone....I’m more than happy to meet up with you at your convenience....”

We ended up having that face to face conversation a few days ago. I signed up a new job contract on Monday and the real challenge did start on Wednesday with a pleasant driving through the countryside where I could behold the beautiful landscape in my way from home to a pinturesque town in Northamtonshire. I’m not sure how long my old little corsa will put up with a daily hour commute. That car is ok for getting out and about in town and the weekly supermarket shopping but I don’t trust it for a longer and sustained journey....will see what happens.

Again I’ve had that good vibe. The people have been very welcoming, helpful and supportive. I can’t actually think of anyone that haven’t said to me “if any problem, give me a shout! ....anyway you’ll be fine, no worries”. They are making me feel confortable....”make yourself at home”. They want me to drink tea “the kettle is here and it’s always on” and to share the lunch at the staff room “where everything happens”. They won’t  leave me alone until I’ll give them the signal. There’s no need to rush. I’m excited, can’t hide it. Now I’m busier, more tired and have little time for myself but I’m also happier.

What I’ve learnt throughout the years is to not being scared of starting over. I’m lucky to live in a country where nurses are desperately needed. I’m lucky to have got a new job that fits with my family life and current circumstances. I’m lucky to have people around to celebrate this new chapter with. I’m a lucky girl.

Acabamos teniendo esa conversación cara a cara hace algunos días.

De nuevo he tenido esa buena sensación.

Lesson 96. Knit row, purl row

Every now and then someone turns up with a brilliant idea. The idea becomes a reality and one finds herself resuming an activity that had been long forgotten in the tender years of her childhood.  A small group of lovely ladies meets up weekly at our school to share some time for knitting and nattering.  Invariably the kettle is on. Nothing is possible in this country without a cup of tea.
The purpose of this Knitting Club is to offer mums and grandmas a chance of socialising, supporting each other and producing something for the comunity all at once.

When I was about twelve years old I had a teacher who was very keen on knitting and all the girls in her class were taught to knit and made a scarf for theirselves during that school year as part of Arts and Crafts. At that time knitting, crochet or sewing was consider an old fashion work already. Girls shouldn't be taught to sew or embroider (since boys wouldn't either). After all, I learnt some basics and my mum, an excellent knitter,  patienly guided my work. My grandma taught me some crochet and hemstitch during a summer but I never kept on and all I've been able to do so far is sewing a buttom or a trousers hem. Certainly useful.

We have been knitting at this club wool squares to make a patchwork blanket. All knitters are welcome, even those who have never taken a knitting needle. Our lovely expert will kindly teach them how to do it. A knit row, a cup of tea, now a purl row and some laughter. A knit row, a confidence. A purl row and perhaps a tear... and a pep talk. Another knit row and time has just flown by. Although a little circle of women will carry on knitting their life stories every Monday afternoon.

Lesson 95. September of my years

I've borrowed the tittle of a beautiful and quiet song by Mr Frank Sinatra for my little post today. September, pretty month at the end of the summer with its magical light and yet its promising school year to come. Although the truly and hidden reason I love it so much is that it's my birthday in September (YAYYYYYY!!!). That's a very especial occasion, don't you dare to deny it and it occurs just once in a year time. Well, I certainly thought of something different to celebrate such a wonderful event (another year lived). It might've been a shopping day (on my own, otherwise it would not be that fun). It might've been an exquisite meal in a posh restaurant (nice but boring). It might've been a suprise party (but I have little faith in my husband, honestly). In the end I got two tickets for a gig at the Corn Exchange Theatre. Don't get me wrong, who do you think I am? I had my cake and my candles, I had a lovely time with friends and family and some cool pressies, including an emotive letter from my handsome boy (those little treassures...). But for our music night out we got a babysitter ;)).

The music, especially the live music has always had a valuable effect on me. It's a healing salve, It's an spiritual motivator. It's a mood converter. The band was called THE ZOOTS, four guys and a gilr who play versions of the glorious sixties tunes. All well known even though you have no music culture whatsoever. I expected a senior audience, my parents generation mostly and I wasn't disappointed. There was plenty of enthusiastic elderly people clapping and singing (good memory for all the lyrics, conceded)vigorously spurred by the vocalist during the whole gig. We had more than two hours of vibrant and very well performed music, impecable sound quality and some memorable moments like that bold-headed guy who spontaneously jumped in with both feet, dancing like hell when The Rolling Stones' Satisfaction was accurately played; the girl who was invited to play on the stage a plastic guitar following the complex coreography of the band; all the people standing up and singing The Beatles' Hey Jude with their mobile phone torches on (sorry, lighters can't be used anymore in a Theatre); or by the end of the show half audience happily leaving their sits and freely dancing at a step distance from the stage.

This is one of the experiences that will keep recorded on my mind for the future as every music moment has been so far.  All through the important contributions that Great Britain has given to the world undoubtedly its music is what I consider the most precious. So thank you very much, guys, well done!!!

Lesson 94. Walking by the seashore

One of the pleasures of my summers on the beach, recently resumed, has been to walk on my own or accompanied by the seashore. During my last holiday in the South of Spain where the sun shines unswervingly and  the bodies joyfully receive its warm sun rays, I've walked on my bare feet feeling the wet sand and the fresh water stroking my ankles. I used to walk unconcernedly, perhaps distracted by the seagulls or entertaining myself with the footprints that others before me had left on the ground.  This time I've been entirely mindful of the gifts that the summer gives away to us. My tanned skin will barely lasts a couple of weeks but the memory of the heat on my body and the gentle breeze on my face will remain hopefully much longer because I need it like the air I breathe.

One afternoon while I was walking on the beach I came across with a lady in her late fifties or early sixties, nice figure, sunglasses on and a ponytail at the back of her head. She was top less, nothing unusual actually, but in this case, she didn't want to hide her scars on her flat chest. She, clearly reconciled with a bitter episode of her life and with her new image, was lively chatting with her partner and obviously something like that catches your eye even though you want to be discreet. I quickly took my eyes out of her and thought how tough life must  have been for her at some point and how strong and confident and happy she must be now. I realized then that we, as human beings, are stronger than we reckon. And this image is what I'd love to remember when my days aren't so bright. That and holding hands with my partner.

There have been plenty of laughs and good simple moments this summer: crowded houses, noisy children and family, delicious fish and magic nights, new and old friends, cuddles and love and some precious moments to reflect and read and rest. Just what I needed to turn over this new leaf. Let's go for it. I, by the by, love September.
