Lesson 39. Shall we read?

This has been the reading book for my son's winter half-term. The first thing we had to do was looking up "fart" in the dictionary. This is its meaning: an emission of intestinal gas from the anus. We did the same for "stink": a very strong, powerfully, disgusting smell. Firstly my eyes popped out while my son couldn't stop laughing. The book actually consist of several short stories about people who have intestinal gasses disease. Farticus Maximus is the story of a young gladiator who had a powerful farting that let unconscious his enemies. It is his secret weapon. But there are more stories, "Better out than in", "Mrs. Deadgass", "Pull my finger"....Can you imagine their plots? It has been extremely amusing to read it together. And we have considerably Then I realized it. Everybody knows that a six-year-old child feels an special attraction and interest in scatological affairs. That's the key to keep them hooked. Finding out what are they interested in and feeding them with those kind of reading. Brilliant isn't it? 

Here the educational system is quite different. They haven't got a lot of homework. I'm really thank them because my boy has a big challenge this year, the language. I think they are more flexible, more respectful of each pupil's differences. The knowledge is easily applicable to real life. For instance, they are asked to spend fakely £20 in different Christmas presents, for that purpose they had to go through a catalogue comparing prices or they might go out for window-shopping. I found it interesting and useful. The same for science comparing at home the different melting point or timing for water, butter or chocolate. But the most important thing is that they catch the students' interest for learning since they are so young. 

There are much more things. Every six weeks they have holiday, for one or two weeks. It depends on the season. But they usually are intercalated.Only the summer break is longer (six weeks too). It seems to me it's impossible to be really tired if they have a rest so often. I suppose that they'll get a better learning achievement. I really don't dare to compare. I don't pretend it neither. Among other things I don't live here for enough time. At this moment the most important thing is that he is making progress very fast. He can understand and speak to others. He is happy at school. But above all he is playing with a classmate at home right now. They enjoy together. I can not ask for anymore.

Este ha sido el libro de lectura de mi hijo durante las vacaciones de mitad del trimestre de invierno. Lo primero que tuvimos que hacer fue buscar "fart" en el diccionario: emisión de gas intestinal desde el ano. Hicimos lo mismo para "stink": un olor muy fuerte, potente y desagradable. Al principio me quedé patidifusa mientras que mi hijo no podía parar de reirse. En realidad el libro consta de diversas historias cortas sobre personas con problemas de gases. "Máximo Pedorro" es la historia de un joven gladiador cuyos potentes pedos dejan inconsciente a sus enemigos. Es su arma secreta. Pero hay más historias, "Mejor fuera que dentro", "La señora Gasletal", "Tira de mi dedo".... Podéis imaginar de qué van? Ha sido super divertido leerlos juntos. Entonces me he dado cuenta. Todo el mundo sabe que un niño de seis años siente una especial atracción e interés por los temas escatológicos. Esta es la  clave para mantenerlos enganchados. Averiguan lo que les interesa y los alimentan con este tipo de   . Genial, no?

El sistema educativo es bastante diferente aquí. No tienen muchos deberes. Estoy realmente agradecida porque mi hijo tiene este año un gran reto, el idioma. Creo que son más flexibles, más respetuosos con las diferencias de cada alumno. Los nuevos conocimientos son fácilmente aplicables a la vida real. Por ejemplo, les pidieron gastar supuestamente 20 libras en diferentes regalos de Navidad, para ello tuvieron que revisar un catálogo comparando precios o podrían salir a mirar escaparates. Lo encontré muy útil e interesante. Lo mismo para Ciencias comparando en casa los distintos puntos o tiempos en que se derrite el agua la mantequilla o el chocolate. Pero lo más importante es que atrapan el interés por aprender de los alumnos desde tan pequeños. 

Hay muchas más diferencias. Cada seis semanas tienen vacaciones, durante una o dos semanas, dependiendo de la temporada. Pero suelen alternarse. Sólo el descanso estival es más largo (seis semanas también). Me da la impresión que es imposible estar realmente cansado si descansan tan a menudo. Supongo que sacarán mayor rendimiento académico. De verdad que no me atrevo a comparar. Tampoco lo pretendo. Entre otras cosas no llevo viviendo aqui tiempo suficiente. En este momento lo más importante es que está progresando muy rápido. Puede entender y hablar a otros. Está contento en el colegio. Pero sobre todo ahora mismo está jugando con un compi en casa. Se divierten juntos. No puedo pedir nada más.
