Lesson 61. About Christmas

School holiday have started today and with them the countdown to Christmas, that special time for me, more now than ever, to come back home and celebrate the birth of Jesus with your family. I have always enjoyed everything related to Christmas even when I had no kids....it must be that the little girl I still have deep inside expects The Three Kings' visit full of illusion. I don't care the shopping nightmare. I forget for a few days the short winter days. I put some humble decorations, most of them homemade, as I left my wooden Nativity set and my beautiful tree in Spain. Never mind. My spirit is joyful. I found "torta imperial" at the supermarket. I'm listening a Christmas songs CD. Unbelievably I managed to hide all the gifts in secret storage place, which is an achievement of scale considering the house size. Everyone is in a good mood. I have rediscovered an old pleasure: writing Christmas cards. It is still here a deep-rooted tradition. Perhaps sometimes excessive. My dearest Sharon (my valued English teacher) told me they can receive around eighty of them and also send as much again. So they stick them on the front door with blue-tack and when it is full, on the kitchen door and it's lovely, isn't it?

Let me tell you now about one of the English Christmas traditions. Apart from the massive cards exchange I find "crackers" particularly interesting. I don't mean the salted biscuits with the same name but a sort of cardboard tube that make a noise similar to a small explotion when two people pull it back at the same time until break it. Inside there are three small treats: a paper crown, it is suppossed you will put it on your head; a plastic Little toy (maybe a whistle, a clip, something like that) and an odd sentence, kind of joke, tongue twister or riddle that you read out to make the others laugh. So, crackers are as christmasies as roast turkey,  mistletoe,  Xmas stockings, Santa Claus, Christmas pudding, mincepies or Christmas tree.

Anyway I wish you all merry Christmas and a happy New Year with or without crackers. Enjoy the family time, smile and love each other a lot. See you next year!!!

Lesson 60. Tattoos everywhere

Now that I can see semi-nude bodies at my consultation room I realice how popular tatoos are at this country. It doesn't matter whether the tattooed are young or old people, neither if they are rich, middle-class or working class. The chosen themes may be pretty different and varied and also the reasons for having it but at the end of the day , all they will be marked for the rest of their lives.

I recently had a patient, a lady in her eighties, with a nice and coloured rose tattooed on her upper left arm: "I had this tattoo for my last birthday....why not?". She needs a stick to walk, she wears a classy pearl necklace and  to a certain extent she looks like my grandma. However she keeps a young girl mind and enjoys making some "risky decisions". I love these old ladies.

There is a TV program called "Tattoo fixers". Some people go to these tattoo fixers to have a new tattoo which covers and old one they are regretted of. Most of times they are young lads who went to Magaluf or somewhere similar on a crazy stag party, became drunk and had a stupid sentence or a horrible tattoo on their body (many times embarrasing things placed on intimate zones) and they want to fix the disaster in some way. In my opinion the problem is that the new tattoo may be even worst than the original one although they ends up very happy (!!!).

It must be something addictive because the tattooed people normally don't have just one but they gradually go on having more and more. It has never been my cup of tea to be tattooed because of its lasting nature but lately the idea doesn't dislike me so much....who knows?

Me encantan esas señoras mayores.

Lesson 59. Remembrance Day

" In Flanders fields the poppies blow                   "En los campos de Flanders las amapolas resoplan
Between the crosses, row on row,                         Entre las cruces, fila a fila,
That mark our place; and in the sky.
The larks, still bravely singing, fly.                       Las alondras, aún cantando valientemente, vuelan.
Scarce heard amid the guns below.                      Apenas se oyen abajo entre los cañones.

We are the Dead. Short days ago.                         Somos la Muerte. Hace pocos días.
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,                  Vivimos, caímos, vimos resplandecer el ocaso,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie.                Amamos y fuimos amados, y ahora yacemos.
In Flanders fields.                                                    En los campos de Flanders.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:                         Recoge nuestra disputa con la niebla:
To you from failing hands we throw.                   Te lanzamos desde las endebles manos.
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die.
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow.           No dormiremos, aunque crezcan amapolas,
In Flanders fields."
                                               En los campos de Flanders."

On 11th November 1918 the World War I was oficially ended. The poem above, written by a Canadian military official, has become a symbol for the Commonwealth Countries which, full of feeling, remember their soldiers fallen in action  every year on that very date though now the ceremony alzo includes all those who died in later conflict wars. The poppy, originally natural, that the vast majority of citizens sport on their jacket lapels, represents the soldiers blood spilled on the battle fields and it's a symbol of respect and recognition of them.

Although the Remembrance Day (or Poppy Day) is 11th/11, the memory acts follow one another along the whole month. The previous Sunday there was an event to pay deserve tribute to those who lost their life at any war. A group of people disposed a big poppy wreath on the memorial wall placed at the bottom of an old  disused hospital. The crowd, gathered  around  it in dead silence, watched attentively the ceremony. The Union Jack  flag waving in the air. In the end everybody sang "God save the Queen", the national anthem.

On Wednesday morning I pop in town, to do some shopping and to return a couple of books to the Library. I took my shopping trolley, as a granny. I spot one of the Library assistant holding the opened front door....I innocently wondered if she might be gently waiting for me. Bless her. And all of a sudden I felt it in my bones: it was 11 o'clock. 11/11 at 11. The lady pointed the finger to a placard. "On Wednesday 11th November at 11 am we'll keep silent for two minutes in respectful memory for Remembrance Day. Thank you." I was petrified as a marbled statue. She politely whispered to me to come in quickly. The people inside, both customers and employees had stopped doing whatever they were doing. Again the same deathly silence I experienced on Sunday. The same respect. The same brotherhood.

In a few days the poppy will be back to a drawer but the pride of being British and the thinking and recognition of their dead shall remain and they'll make them  wear again the delicate flower next November.

Lesson 58. Bonfire Night

"Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."

Here they are,  the first verses of this old rhyme inspired by Guy Fawkes'  unsuccesful attempt of blowing up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605. The Catholic Fawkes leaded a plot against the Protestant King trying to get a real religious freedom which actually didn't exist. The men put 36 barrels of gunpowder in the Houses of Parliament and they waited for the King James I to open Parliament. However, police found the gunpowder on time to avoid the tragedy and they caught all the men involved in the plot. The men were tortured and killed.

Since then every 5th Nov this remembrance festival is held in the UK in an eye-catching and shocking way. Lots of bonfires are made. They put a dummy on the top which represents Guy Fawkes and make it burnt. Afterwards the fireworks are set off. The biggest bonfires are made at wide places such as sports courts or playground schools. Anyway you can make your own bonfire at your house rear garden cos it is allowed if you follow a safe code. Some people jump at the chance to burn old stuff which it reminds me of a traditional Spanish festival related to the fire as well.

Apparently this is the second most important festival in the UK after Christmas. It's normally quite cold on Bonfire Night so people wear warm clothes to spend the evening outside. Traditional foods are sausages, jacket potatoes and toffee apples. The sky fills in bright colours and many people are in a good mood to set foot out of their houses after 5 pm, which I particularly appreciate a great deal. Not only on that evening you can hear the noisy fireworks but they are usually extended until the next weekend. Who said that November was a dull month?

Lesson 57. The civic duty

Sunny and warm Sunday on the first of November. The news retells us about the Indian Summer. I walk town and run across my friend. She is going to London on Monday to register as a permanent resident in the U.K. and to do the paperwork for voting on the Spanish General Elections. Normally you need to make an appointemt to solve these issues at the Consulate. Nevertheless and just for a few days you are allowed to go there with no previous appointment precisely because of the Elections. We aren't still registered. It isn't easy if you don't live in London. Why don't you join me tomorrow?? Ok dear, thank you for letting me know, I'll go with you!!!

We set off at 5.30 am (I don't remember to have got up so early ever). To my surprise the A1 is full of cars in their way to work. I simply find it terrible. Near London we even have to stop for  a tailback's sake. After a train journey and a couple of tube rides we finally go out into the open air. The cloudy sky and the fog make such a typical day in London just for a few minutes until we arrive at the front door of the Consulate, still closed, as we are 45 minutes early. A ten of people are queueing on the street. It's so weird to listen to other strangers speaking in my on language... Once we are inside I clearly recognise the Spanish style, I mean, the noise at the waiting room is beyond all bearing, the workers don't use the British dress code (nobody wears black or dark clothes). We do the paperwork in over an hour and then we decide to eat something. We are starving as we didn't have any breakfast (who could have done it at 5 am?). It is our little treat after the effort made: full English breakfast for two, please. The waiter is Argentinian and very attentive. He speaks to us in our common language. At this moment I think with relief "the early bird catches the worm" because it's already done.

Again the way back is so tedious. At least we both are such a chatty women. A fact which makes more bearable the trip. I am at home in time to pick my son up from school. I'm exhausted but happy in the sensation of duty accomplished. I'd have never thought that the fact of voting could be so rough...

Aún no estamos registrados.

Lesson 56. Packed lunch

The packed lunch concept as a hot meal doesn't exist in England. It usually consists of a sandwich, crisps, yogourth, a bar of chocolate and the most lucky may have a piece of fruit. The school offers a hot dinner but it's up to you to bring your own food from home. Last year I choose the hot meal for my son but I wasn't happy with it. Neither did I with the one in Spain.

I bought a thermos flack and I started to send home made food (lentils or chick peas casseroles, soups, meatballs, bologneise pasta, spinachs or coliflowers with prawns, this kind of things) and some fruit. When I picked my boy up from school at 3.15 pm and most of days the lunch box was intact I felt frustrated and upset. Why didn't you eat your meal? Why  didn't you open the thermo? Mummy I didn't like it....or I wasn't hungry....or even I could't open it!!! But after having his lunch at home (obviously, the same one he brought) he just asked me: Why don't you just give me the NORMAL stuff?? What do you mean with the "normal" stuff ?? I don't know Mum.....some crisps and chocolate. Everybody bring these things for lunch. For God's sake!!! You aren't eating junk food just because many people do. I don't care what other people do, I only care for you. We are still struggling with the matter, but I won't surrender.

The superb famous cheff Jamie Oliver has run a campaign against the junk food in the UK. He has achieved the government enforces a "sugar tax" for those products highly sugary: mainly refreshments and processed food. The obesity has increased so much in this country that it has become a priority for the NHS. I cannot be surprised at all after watching what children drink all the time; a sort of coloured sweet water called squash instead of plain water, actually the helthiest drink. Jamie tried a change at school meals to make them healthier and he filmed a TV documental serie. The school assessed bu the cheff started to provide healthier meals for the children and they were not allowed to bring sugary food, so their packed lunch were reviewed everyday. Unbelievebly the parents tried to pass  through the school fences on their children chocolate bars, cans of refreshments and sweets. Shocking, frustrating, sad and annoying. It is no sense teaching kids a different way of feeding with no support from the parents. Bless them!

Por qué no has comido? Sólo me importas tú.

Pobrecitos!

Lesson 55. The expected visit

We received an email to agree a routine checking visit from the Letting Agency. These visits appear on the letting contract. You have to allow them even though you can't be present during it. They add something like that at the end of the notice: "We would like you to be at home when we go there so you might tell our agent any concern about the house, although it is not essential as we have a key. In case we can NOT enter in the property (new lock or adding other security system) you will be charged by £60 fee." (Cool).

Owners are highly protected by the law. They can get rid of the tenant just giving him a notice two months in advance. When the tenant is the one who wants to leave, he has to notify it one month before the leaving date. If any of them don't fill his agreement he will be fined.

Here the letting market is pretty dynamic, houses frequently change of tenant . It's a difficult task to get a good house in our loving Stamford. The demand is so high and the town is not so big that although  many houses are available, they last on offer only a few days.

We agreed the visit on a Thursday at 3.30 pm. My son has an afterschool on Thursdays til 4 pm so I thought it would be fine because one of my Friends have told me they just take a few minutes to complete the visit. When at 3.55 pm the lettting agent hadn't still arrived I decided to stick a note on the front door: "Sorry, I had to go out at 4, I'll be back in 15 minutes". I was locking the door when he parked his car and I said to him that I had to pick up my son form school but it wouldn't take me more than 15 minutes to come back home. That young blonde guy told me then:
-"No worries, Madam, I have a key!!!" (I thought I was going to kill him).
- "Sorry but I'd rather to be at home while you do your work, so if you don´t mind could you please wait for me til I come back again?"
- "That's fine. I'll go to other house in the meanwhile"
-"Thank you very much"

In the end he came at home at 4.30 pm. He politely  took his shoes off when he set foot inside. He checked his long list, mainly the fire alarm system and had a look on the whole house to make sure we didn't pull down any wall. He left with a
-"Thank you for having the house so tidy and well-manteined"
- "This is our home now and we like to be comfortable"
- "Yes that's the way it should be but, trust me, some people live in a lasting mess, I can´t understand it but that's the unvarnished truth".
Who knows what this man will see out there...

Entonces aquel joven rubio me dijo:
-"No importa señora, tengo llave!!!"
Iré a otra casa mientras tanto"
- "Muchas gracias"
