Lesson 52. The dentist

 Everybody knows that dental check-ups are expensive. Nevertheless they can be up to 40% cheaper if you belong to the NHS dental care assistance. Consequently everyone apply for it but there is a long waiting list at any  NHS Dental Practice and by the time you are approved you will probably have needed some assistance. Anyway it is worth a try unless you are one of the wealthy ones. Despite the premises above my family and I were just admitted in two months time after applying and I received a call phone for a first visit.

 My dentist is an Iranian doctor and he is really kind,
- Is your surname German?
- Not at all, it's Spanish
- Uh, I love Spain, I've been there recently...I went to Barcelona, very nice city (he doesn't know that apparently they don't want to be Spanish, although they are at the moment) but your name is German isn't it?
- I'm afraid again not.
and I had to explain to him that story about the German Car Company owner's Spanish wife  and the reason to name the Company with a Spanish name.
He asked me a few general questions, examined and scanned my teeth and he added showing me the X-ray on the screen
-You can see a shadow underneath this filling, I don't know what is but it's worrying me a bit. I'd suggest to remove it and see what is in it.
-What do you mean with "feeling"? (how embarrassing it's not knowing the specific terms) Is it when you have a partially black tooth and then it's removed and it's put a silver or white thing on it??
-BINGO!
And that is the way I've learnt the meaning of fillings (sounds like feelings), cavities, gum and others in less than fifteen minutes.
- You should also go to the hygienist as soon as possible

 A few days later I had my dental hygiene and a practical lesson to clean my teeth properly using a false teeth and an electronic toothbrush. The hygienist also recommended me to use dental floss and repeating the hygiene in three months time because I had lots of tartar and she couldn't remove it completely.
- Mercy, your gums are not happy
- Really?? I tried to reply her while my mouth was open
 Sometimes I allow other people to call me Mercy when it's so difficult to pronounce my name for them.
 That's the matter with the dentists, after you start going they grab you for ever


 Todo el mundo sabe que las revisiones dentales son caras. Sin embargo pueden ser hasta un 40% más baratas si perteneces al sistema nacional de salud para la atención odontológica. Por lo que todo el mundo la solicita pero la lista de espera es muy larga en cualquier Clínica dental asociada al NHS y para cuando eres admitido probablemente habrás necesitado alguna consulta. en cualquier caso merece la pena el intento a no ser que seas uno de los adinerados. A pesar de las premisas anteriores mi familia y yo fuimos admitidos en sólo dos meses tras solicitarlo y recibí una llamada telefónica para la primera visita.

 Mi dentista es iraní y es muy amable,
-Su apellido es alemán?
-No que va, es español
-Ah, me encanta España, he estado allí recientemente...fui a Barcelona, una ciudad muy bonita (él no sabe que por lo visto no quieren ser españoles, aunque de momento lo son). Pero su nombre sí es alemán, verdad?
-Me temo que no.
Y tuve que explicarle esa historia sobre la mujer española del propietario de la Compañía de coches alemana y la razón para ponerle un nombre español a la misma.
Me hizo algunas preguntas generales, examinó mis dientes e hizo unas radiografías y añadió mostrándome la imagen de la placa en la pantalla:
-Puedes ver una sombra debajo de ese 'filling'. No sé lo que es pero me preocupa un poco. Yo sugeriría retirarlo y ver qué hay dentro.
-Qué quiere decir con 'feeling'?  (qué embarazoso es no conocer bien los términos) Se refiere a cuando tienes un trozo de muela negro y entonces te lo quitan y en su lugar ponen una cosa blanca o de plata?
-BINGO!
Y así es como he aprendido el significado de empastes (suena igual que sentimientos), caries, encías y otros en menos de quince minutos.
-Deberías ir también a hacerte una limpieza dental tan pronto como puedas.

Unos días más tarde me hice la limpieza dental y tuve una clase práctica de cómo cepillarme los dientes adecuadamente usando una dentadura postiza y un cepillo eléctrico. La higienista también me recomendó utilizar seda dental y repetir la limpieza en tres meses porque tenía mucho sarro y no pudo eliminarlo del todo.
-Mercy, tus encías no están bien
-En serio?? trataba de responder yo con la boca abierta
A veces dejo que me llamen Mercy si les resulta muy difícil pronunciar mi nombre.
Esto es lo que pasa con los dentistas. Una vez que empiezas te agarran para siempre.
