Lesson 46. Bank Holiday

1st of May, work day festivity in all Europe, with the exception of U.K. "We are different", they say when you point it them out. In return, they have a bank holiday on 4th May, Monday. Why? because they are worth it. There is no apparently reason for British bank holidays. Please, note that every "bank holiday", and there are quite a few, are always Monday. This is not a coincidence. As they are not guided by religious festivities, every year these days are moved at the convenience of the calendar, in a form that bank holidays are spread over the year as appropiate; with a few exceptions such as Christmas day, New Year's day, Good Friday or the Queen's birthday. Even Saint George's day, the patron saint of England, wasn't a holiday. Many cars and houses sported proudly the English flag that day, and there were some celebrations: military parades, sports events, official acts, etc. However everybody went to work.
The fact of enjoying a holiday Monday, in most cases, has some advantageous. One of them is to assure two (for the Saturday workers) or three (for the weekdays workers) holiday days in a row. Other is to avoid holiday days in the middle of the week, which apparently decreases the companies' productivity.
What I asked for Christmas this year was a calendar. I had been going blindfold until that time. Now I am still taken unaware by some "bank holidays" but, at least, I cannot complaint. Next one, apart from 4th May, is on 25th May, again Monday. Perfect: we have visitors for that long weekend!!!! Hopefully we have a proper Spring weather by then. Primero de Mayo, fiesta del día del trabajo en toda Europa, con excepción de Reino Unido. "Somos diferentes", dicen ellos cuando se lo haces notar. A cambio tienen un día festivo el 4 de mayo, lunes. ¿Por qué? porque ellos lo valen. No hay razón aparente para los festivos en Gran Bretaña. Por favor, nótese que cada "bank holiday", y hay unos cuantos, caen siempre en lunes. Esto no es casualidad. como no se rigen por fiestas religiosas, cada años estas fiestas se mueven según convenga al calendario, de manera que los días festivos se reparten por todo el año como mejor venga; con muh pocas excepciones, como el día de Navidad, el día de Año Nuevo, Viernes Santo y el cumpleaños de la Reina. Incluso San Jorge, el día del patrón de Inglaterra no fue festivo. Muchos coches y casas lucieron orgullosamente la bandera inglesa aquel día y hubo algunas celebraciones: desfiles militares, eventos deportivos, actos oficiales, etc. Pero todo el mundo fue a trabajar.
El hecho de disfrutar de un lunes festivo, en la mayoría de los casos, tiene algunas ventajas. Una de ellas es asegurar dos (para los que trabajan los sábados) o tres (para los que trabajan de lunes a viernes) días seguidos de fiesta. Otro es evitar días de fiesta en mitad de la semana, que según parece disminuyen la productividad de las empresas.
Lo que pedí este año por Navidad fue un almanaque. Había ido a ciegas hasta ese momento. Ahora aún me cojen por sorpresa algunos "bank holidays" pero al menos, no me puedo quejar. El siguiente, aparte del 4 de mayo, es el 25 de mayo, también lunes. Perfecto: ¡¡¡¡esperamos visita para ese largo fin de semana!!!! Espero que tengamos un tiempo realmente primaveral para entonces.
