lesson 22. Please, Keep the queue

 This is the kingdom of the queues. Everywhere with more than two people waiting for a service (at the bus stop, the Post Office, the bakery or Caffe Nero -one of those coffe shops similar to Starbucks but with glass cups...Thanks be to the Lord!) it will happen: a tidy queue will fall in line quikcly. English people are able to make a perfect queue and they are very proud of it. They seems to be relaxed and confident. I might say that they are happy. While you are keeping the queue nobody is in a hurry and it is unthinkable that someone doesn´t keep it patiently. Even the other person has a shopping smaller than yours, I´ve never heard him: "would you mind if I pass before?". It´s suppossed that you will offer him this chance in the name of the politeness and the good manners.       But each rule has its exception and in this case the queue rule doesn´t work at the pubs. At least it doesn´t in this way. When you want to order for a drink to the barman you can find a lot of crowded people in two lines waiting for the barman´s signal to be served. And it could be a short look from him or a slight browseyes elevation. If you suspect that somebody who came after you get his drinks before it can get on your nerves. Don´t worry about it. The barman has an special skill to remember who came the first. Don´t bother raising your hand or your voice to get his attention. You´ll be ignored and probably also deprecciated. And when you finally get your drinkl you think that you had to order two or three more at that moment because you spent a lot of time, more than it takes you to drink it. And begin to begin.


 Este es le reino de las colas. En cualquier sitio con más de dos personas esperando un servicio (en la parada de autobús, la oficina de Correos, la panadería o el Caffe Nero - una de esas cafeterias parecida a Starbucks pero con tazas de cristal... Gracias a Dios!) ocurrirá: una cola ordenada se alineará rapidamente. Los ingleses son capaces de hacer una cola perfecta y están orgullosos de ello. Parecen relajados y confiados. Podría decir que son felices. Mientras esperas laas cola nadie tiene prisa y es impensable que alguien no espere su turno pacientemente. Incluso si la otra persona lleva una compra más pequeña que la tuya, nunca he oido decir: "le importa que pase yo primero?". Se supone que tú le ofrecerás esa posibilidad en nombre de la cortesía y las buenas maneras.
 Pero cada norma tiene su excepción y en este caso la norma de la cola no funciona en los pubs. Al menos del mismo modo. Cuando quieres pedir una bebida al barman puedes encontrarte un montón de gente apelotonada en dos filas esperando la señal del hombre de la barra para ser atendido. Y puede ser una breve mirada o una ligera elevacion de cejas. Si sospechas que alguien que llegó después de tí consigue sus bebidas antes te puedes poner de los nervios. No te preocupes. El hombre de la barra tiene una especial habilidad para recordar quién llegó primero. No te molestes en levantar la mano o elevar la voz para conseguir su atención. Serás ignorado y probablemente despreciado. Y cuando por fin consigues tu copa piensas que tenías que haber pedido dos o trés más en ese momento porque has perdido mucho tiempo, más de lo que tardas en bebertela. Y vuelta a empezar.
