Lesson 114. Pub crawl

According to a not very recommended dictionary a pub crawl is a tour taking place in several pubs or drinking places, with one or more drinks at each. According to my own experience a pub crawl is a drinking marathon through the town with the only purpose of getting drunk by the forth pub you visit and still to carry on with the planned pilgrimage. Ending up crawling is a minor detail. I had heard of such a British practice many times either for a retirement do or for a birthday party. However I had never had the chance to do it myself until very recently.

This was a double birthday celebration, two lads, boyhood friends, same age and with birthdays very close. Starting at 4 pm on a Saturday. Initially only guys. By a quirk of fate, girls were finally welcomed to join the broader group of men from 8 pm. We met at halfway of the list of pubs which order were meticulously organised and rigorously executed. I was, after all, that once everyone got his drink served there was about twenty minutes of relax and all of a sudden the leader of the gang would stand, leaving his empty glass on the table, put his coat on and give us the signal to move on the next place. Bloody hell!!!! you'd better hurry up drinking or you won't be able to keep up with these guys. There is a fine line between being tipsy and being dead drunk. Some people crossed the line widely.

I shall keep in memory the "borrowed" wooden spoon that came with us in this route, the numerous toasts, one of the honorees flying up tossed by his friends, the laughter and some interesting conversations through the evening. A night to remember.

PS I can assure I did not end up crawling but that's very possibly because, thankfully, I did join much later.

Lesson 113. Witty Will

Since I can't attend any English course which would keep pushing me to improve, I've tried to take every learning opportunity I've come across with. The most recent and worthy has been an on line course organised by British Council through its Future Learn courses. They offer all kind of English courses and for all levels too. The one I found was called "Exploring English: Shakespeare". I was very doubtful at the beginning. Shakespeare always sounds pretty intellectual. Besides he wrote in old English which adds more difficulty to my tired brain, especially at night, when I had planned to dedicate some time to it. I finally decided to give me a try because, in essence, I enjoy the challenges and I felt that was a big one.

What can I tell you about it after six weeks of live Facebook sessions, links, lots of reading, recordings, searching and writing about The Bard?? Firstly that it has been an unexpectedly pleasant and enjoyable experience and secondly that I have lost my initial fear of him. This, my first approach to William Shakespeare and some of his plays, has made me understand a bit better this diabolical language. Now, the unattainable Shakespeare, has become the witty Will; once you realise he was a genius at wordplaying, coining and even inventing thousands of words, still in use today and an incredibly able writer with a vast work, mainly plays but also poetry.

This new, slightly disrespectful and almost rogue view of the playwright is partially due to this course but also for Terry Deary's "Horrible Histories", the large collection of historical but hilarious children oriented books and its equivalent TV series. One of them is entirely dedicated to Shakespeare. The whole collection is hysterically funny but at the same time very reliable. We are huge fans at home.

Now, if you ever visit London, don't miss The Globe, a wonderful theatre by the Thames river that is a perfect replica of the original one, built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company nearby and destroyed by fire only fourteen years later. It's worth a visit for its curious circular shape and due to the fact that there are no seats on the ground floor, only in the surrounding stalls. Theatre goers in the old days didn't care whatsoever. They just wanted to have fun by watching plenty of murders, betrayals and comic or romantic scenes. They would happily stand up for three hours if Hamlet was on stage.

About two years ago I went to  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolethorpe_Hall   to see "The Tempest", the last play written by Will. Obviously I struggled a big deal to understand what was going on, but it still was a remarkable experience. The atmosphere was kind of magical. Today I know that the supernatural theme has a strong presence on this play. I'm planning to repeat this coming Summer. Every year two or three different Shakesperean plays are represented there. It will be a challenge though, but I'm sure it'll be more pleasant to watch.

Lesson 112. Blind Thai massage

Months ago I was given a Thai massage gift voucher. I took it grateful but a bit relunctant if I am honest. I stopped going to a particular hairdresser because they included a head massage after washing my hair and I would be on edge due to that touching. However I regularly suffer from tired feet and I "massage" them at any opportunity. I felt myself more keen on a feet massage rather than other part of my body so I went through the list of services offered and I found the one: foot reflexology. Of course I focused on the first word and totally ignored the second one. I finally arranged an appointent and I turned up to the premises not even knowing what to expect....

A tiny Thai lady welcomed and invited me to fill a form as I was a new client. Then I was driven to a small room with a bed. She asked me if I wanted the reflexology therapy or just a feet massage. I had no idea. I told her I did not know as it was my first massage. She smiled at me in approval. She decided to do my legs and feet and I had to take my bottom clothes off. The room was in total darkness but a very faint light and I could barely see. A gentle mixture of Asian music, birdsongs and whispering of waterfalls played in the background. I thought I was about to have a nap. How wrong can one be!. The tiny lady whilst rubbing her hands with essential oil warned me to tell her if during the procedure I felt any pain. (What did she mean with pain? ). I haltingly nodded. The discreet lady turned to be a cold-blooded serial killer. She sank her thumbs on my arch foot and the torture started. she thoroughly worked both feet and legs. I tried to endure my pain in silence but occassionally I could't help to scream out. She kept apologising but she was ruthless. At times I laughed too due to the pain. Nothing could distract her from her duty. She massaged me, she beated me, she pulled my toes until they creaked, she crushed me. A bashing. Apparently she found plenty of knots under my skin and I swear she released all of them. To my astonishment she made a few remarks about football, she said she was a supporter of Liverpool football team. I was mute in disbelief. I could imagine her yelling, the fiercest holligan, at Anfield stadium. After taht disclosure, everything made sense.

No regrets, though. Once we were done I felt over the moon. I highly recommed it either you like feet massage or you are a sucker for punishment.

Lesson 111. Saving Ryan Duck

I´m rushing off as usual to get my kid to his weekly Scout meeting. The car park is just round the corner from the venue. I repeat to myself why I wont't have leave home earlier. I turn left afer the crossroads and there she is, an octogenarian lady with a purple raincoat, in the middle of the road with her arms extended and a worrying expression on her face, giving the drivers a signal of 'Watch out!'. I brake violently and I realise she is not alone. Other ladies of similar age support her efforts from the pavement by shouting and moving their arms so rapidly that I wonder whether they would take off any minute now. I find myself half way to the car park entrance (nothing to worry about as the lady in violet protects me) and I suddenly spot the cause of this traffic chaos: a DUCK. A stray duck wanders around the car park. He runs around like a headless chicken actually. He qwacks loud and nervoulsy. I finally managed to go into the car park. Once out of my car I can hear one of the ladies remark "He is so scared, bless him" another one is just able to stifle a cry of anguish, "Oh my God!". There's still a third one armed with a cardboard box where I suspect she naively intends to get him in. She can not.

Although I want to stay longer to see how everything ends up I must leave the scene quickly and when I'm back Ryan Duck heads qwacking like mad for Scotgate conveniently escorted by the cheerful crew who follow him responsibly looking out for every possible danger until they all reach the Meadows five hundred metres away. Then poor Ryan Duck will rejoin at last with his mates and could chill out swimming in the river Welland. Meanwhile the line of cars at Scotgate goes as far as the eye can see.

I've just received a text from a friend. She has an injured pigeon at her rear garden. She has called the vet in the hope they can take care of the bird or even better to advice her to leave the wild pigeon to its fate. On the contrary, the vet asks her to bring the pigeon along. She's got the cardboard box and a towel. I suggest her to contact the lady with the purple raincoat. That madam is determined and won't give up.

Lesson 110. Benches and Vans.

One of the things that unequivocally announces the arrival of Spring is the ice cream van. That van goes down the streets of the town playing its popular tune and every now and then it stops for a while at strategical sites; typically outside schools, next to the meadows or on a corner of Recreation ground where dozens of children will crowd round in excitement to savour a soft serve ice cream from a machine, served in a cone, and often with a chocolate flake. The appearance or the ice cream van also unofficially marks the start of sandals and short sleeves season (no matter the temperature in fact).

The sense of Spring brings me wonderful memories of the time I have spent in the park for the last years.  If you have read some of my earlier posts you will know exactly what I am talking about. Unluckily my son has reached that age in which he is not interested as much as I am in parks and we don't frequent it so often any more. When the temperature is kind we tend to lay out the picnic blanket on the green dense lawn. It is nicer than sitting down on a bench. Besides there are just a few. I consider those benches places of great respect, almost sacred in a way. There is a good reason. Not a single one is not dedicated to someone who left already. I reckon that some families donate them to the community. They are everywhere: at the parks, by the river, in Rutland Water, on a hillside facing a lovely view, at any outdoor public space. They usually sport a plain plaque with these words: " In loving memory of...." with the date of birth and the date of death. Sometimes a few nice words are added as a short explanation of how much time the person used to enjoy that particular place. I believe it is a touching gesture. Whenever I come across with some of those benches I always take the time to read the humble plaque and think of the person who is dedicated to for a while. It has become a ritual. I love rituals.

Lesson 109. Order!

Another April Fools' Day has gone but the Big Brexit Joke is still to come. Shortly. There is no necklace that can help it. Nor even Mr John "speaker" Bercow's "order, order, orrrdeeeeer!!!"famous  battle cry seems to be able to fix the dominant gibberish at the British Parliament. I glance astonished at the sessions that their lord/ladyships presents us day in and day out at Westminster. Quite a show. After countless historic votes MPs have been unable to come to terms. It is the groundhog day. Once again. It's exhausting and nonsense. I never thought that I would ever see such a  deplorable spectacle. Not in this country. I guess the whole process is going to claim a few victims (an their corresponding necklaces and ties).

Whereas the population is increasingly getting divided and confronted; Mr Bercow has become so popular, especially among non Britons,  that you can go on line and buy T-shirts bearing his ferocious face with the word ORDER printed on it. This enthusiasm is not universal in the UK. His ruling of parliamentary procedure has made him one of the most admired and hated men in the country. Certainly this is his big moment, after ten years being the speaker of the Houses of Parliament, this is what he will be remembered for.

Recently, Britains and Non Britains have been (and will be) bombarded with all sort of uncertainties and a wide variety of possible answers to numerous questions depending on the Brexit outcome. What if...?, what if...?, what if ...?. The tesion increases along with the extension of the deadline. 29th of March, the B (for Brexit) day has no longer any meaning. It feels like holding our breath for an undetermined period of time just to take a new and deep breath in until the next B day comes. And so over and over. By the time this nightmare ends our oxygen level could be at its lowest ebb. Not for Mr Speaker, who has proved a wealth evidence of  lung capacity to keep calling to order to the MPs without batting an eyelid.

Lesson 108. The British phlegm

How would you react if you come back home after a short absence to find the fire engine at your doorstep? How would you react if your garden fence had burnt out because on a very windy day your husband happened to light a fire in the middle of the garden to get rid of some old timber and sticks? How would you deal with the firefighters mocking comments alerting your husband of your presence such as " She is back!, Careful!!"?? And finally...how would you handle your own hubby questioning you about your mood after a few hours of tense calm ("Why are you so grumpy?") ???

Well, if you are British you'd take a deep breath in and run into the kitchen to turn the kettle on. Then with one hand you'd wave the firemen through the window kitchen whilst the other hand would hold the steamy mug.You would feel deep inside that, at least, there is something that would never let you down, a cup of tea. And there it would start a sort of dance that has been danced by the couple many times before. The cold war where you could cut the atmosphere with a knife, where communication gets limited to a brief an essential information exchange like "the dog needs to be walked" or "your mum called earlier". How long this situation would last is  proportional to the anger and concern caused. What is fascinating it's the ability of holding your emotions to yourself to avoid a major crisis (insults, stabbing or even murder). Very civilised. Very British.

Things between them would warm up eventually and there would be a discussion and some new decisions would be made: to buy a fire extinguisher and to write a list of forbidden activities for firebug husbands.

If you are native to a Mediterranean country all the yelling and shouting would have been heard at Buckingham Palace. A very different story.

PS. A true story where the main characters won´t be revealed.
